Will you commit with me to spend time with God each day? Your growth as a daughter of the King depends on it!
Something that you may not know about me is that I am a statistician by trade. Yep, I love a good research article, and I have one for you today! In the January 2023 article by Christianity today on The State of Quiet Time, they reported that only HALF of all women who attend church regularly have a daily time set aside to be alone with God - what we often call a "quiet time." Only half!
As someone who has gone through phases in my walk with Jesus where I was very consistent in my time with God, and phases where that time was non-existent, you will find no condemnation here if you are one of the many women who do not regularly spend time alone with God. However, you will find strong encouragement from your sister whose lack of a quiet time led her down a very dark and scary road. This is a practice that you MUST develop to safe guard your peace and protection on your walk with Jesus.
Thus, we are writing a blog series to help you develop the habit of daily time alone with God. If you are already consistent with this practice, please let us know your tips and advice for others in building their quiet time by commenting on the post below.
Are you ready? Will you commit with me to spend time with God each day? Your growth as a daughter of the King depends on it!
One of the best books I have every read about how to create a habit is Atomic Habits by James Clear. Though it is a secular book, the principles on habit creation are easily applied to spiritual disciplines such as a daily quiet time.
To build a lasting habit, we are going to go slow. This week, there is just one simple task - pick a time and commit to it.
PICK A TIME
As for what time is best, I would recommend first thing in the morning, but we are not legalistic, so we certainly won't be about this either. When the first thing I do each day is spend time with my creator, I set myself up for following Him throughout the day. Thus, first thing is best for me. Pick a time of the day that will work for you, and will be a time you can do EVERY day for 15-30 minutes. Maybe it is at lunch or right before bed.
This week - decide on that time, and set a reminder in your phone for that time each day. When the timer goes off this week, just stop and say a short prayer thanking God for who He is and asking Him to create this habit in your life. That's it. We won't spend more than that at first, as we are building our spiritual muscle memory. Next week, we will add more to it.
If you do want to pick first thing in the morning, I recommend that you determine when the latest it is that you need to wake up to comfortably get ready and start your day as it is now. For me, that is 6:30 so that I can get baby girl up, dressed, fed, and to school. Now, count backwards 30 minutes from that time. So for me - 6:00. That is when I will set my alarm to get up. This week, go a head and get out of bed, say your short prayer, and then use that extra time as you wish - maybe have your coffee while it is still hot! LOL. Remember that this week, you are developing a habit one step at a time.
