Creating a Daily Quiet Time
Part 2

If having a quiet time is not something you have as a consistent habit, someone asking you about it can feel...well...intimidating. It is something we know we need, but most of us struggle with it. If you aren't struggling now, you probably can remember a time when you did.

In part 1 of this series on creating a daily quiet time habit, I mentioned the article in the January 2023 article by Christianity today on The State of Quiet Time reported that only HALF of all women who attend church regularly have a daily time set aside to be alone with God. Thus, the probability that you struggle in this area is high. The probability that the person you are talking to struggles as well is also high. So don't feel judgement, set aside the condemnation the enemy wants you to feel, and acknowledge the ways God is working in your life. If you are reading this article, then you want to have that time alone with God, and He wants that too.

Last week I told you how important it is for me to have this time. Yet even I don't make it a priority 100% of the time. This morning is a good example. We had to be up earlier than normal for kids' activities, so I did not have my quiet time. I will try to do it later, but that might not happen. And that is ok. Not ideal. Not great. Not what I want or wish for, but ok. I will make sure that I do it tomorrow and not get out of the habit. Missing one day does not break a habit. Missing two days can head you down that road.

In this blog series, we will be looking at ways to create that habit, based on science, so that your relationship with God has that firm foundation.

Let us know in the comments below what struggles you have, or have had, with creating this daily practice. What obstacles get in your way? What advice do you have for someone who does not have the quiet time that they want to have?

How to create a quiet time habit

Creating a Daily Quiet Time Habit - Pick a Location

Last week we took the small step of just setting the time aside. Setting an alarm and saying a short prayer. If you missed that newsletter, you can read the blog post about this step here.

I told you last week that to build a lasting habit, you have to go slow and get consistent. This week, we are going to build on last week's practice of setting our time by picking a location.

PICK A LOCATION

This week we are going to pick the location. Prayer closet, your back porch, your bedroom, corner of your living room, picnic table outside at work, your car, the location really doesn't matter. The ability for that location consistently to provide you time alone with God is the key. Jesus said to go into our prayer closet and pray to our Father who is in heaven. That verse, and the movie War Room, are reasons why there are social media trends showing women praying in a literal closet that they have converted into a special place. If you can do that - awesome! For me, I don't have enough storage space, so it is out of the question. I do have a home office, however. So that becomes my space.

Next, you will want to ensure the space is convenient for you to have time with God. You will need all of your "supplies." I will write a whole article on my favorites, but for now, a Bible, paper, and a pen is sufficient.

This week - pick your location, gather some supplies, and go there each time your alarm goes off for your quiet time. Pray and thank God for allowing you to grow and develop this habit. That's it! Your whole assignment this week. I told you we were going slow!
