Creating a Daily Quiet Time
Part 4

In the chaos of life, finding time to slow down can feel impossible, right? But those quiet moments are essential for your faith and well-being. Whether you're a seasoned believer or just getting started, carving out a daily quiet time with God can transform your day. Let’s chat about some practical strategies straight from James Clear’s "Atomic Habits" to help you create a habit that sticks. You’ll see how to pick the perfect cue, stack habits seamlessly, and set up your space for success.

If you haven't been following along on our Quiet Time journey, here are some posts to catch you up:

  • If you still need help with choosing the best time for your daily devotion, you can find help here in our first blog post in the series.

  • Check out our second blog post on choosing a location for your devotional if you need help with that.

  • Our third blog post in the series covers how to establish a routine during your Quiet Time. It also includes some FAQs that you might find VERY interesting, such as what does my quiet time look like on the weekends, and what about prayer languages?

Now, are you ready to dive into creating a lasting habit?

Creating a Daily Quiet Time Part 4

Creating a Lasting Habit

If you have been around The Ruby Tent's social media at all (and if you haven't, please check it out!), you have heard me talking about James Clear book on habit building, Atomic Habits. This book includes habit-building strategies backed by science.

Pick a cue

When we discussed picking a time, we talked a little about this. A cue is a trigger that takes you to the next action. When your alarm goes off in the morning, that is your cue to get out of bed. When deciding on a quiet time, if we select a strong cue and perform our habit each time that cue occurs, we will start doing our quiet time every morning automatically, without even thinking about it. Thus, the cue needs to be very specific, such as when the coffee is made, and not vague, like in the morning.

Habit Stacking

What makes a super strong cue is an already established habit. Do you ALWAYS have a cup of coffee first thing in the morning? That would be a perfect cue for your quiet time. Do you run EVERY day at lunch? What about building your quiet time into your lunch time after your run? Those are just some examples of using a habit that you already have as your cue to do a habit you want to build.

Make it easy

If your cue for your quiet time is making your cup of coffee, but you then have to find your Bible and your journal, and then your kid wakes up, and then you have lost your pen, and then you need to move to another room, you will be tempted to give up before you even get started. Thus, make it easy! Have your area already set up with your Bible, pen and journal before you go to bed. Wake up before your family if that is needed to avoid interruptions. Set your space up for success in advance. This will make it more likely that you will follow through.

Summary

Making your daily quiet time stick starts with picking a reliable cue, stacking habits, and keeping the setup simple. Find a trigger that signals your quiet time, then use an established habit to make it flow. Keep your Bible and journal ready so you can jump right in without distractions. James Clear’s habit-forming tips can help you build a rhythm that feels natural and fulfilling. How's your journey coming along?
